- Galileo Galilei was born on the 15th of February, 1564 and died on the 8th of January, 1642. Galilei was an Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher who had played a major role in the Scientific Revolution. His achievements had included the improvements to the telescope and consequent astronomical observations, and the support for Copernicanism. Galileo Galilei has been called the "father of modern observational astronomy," the "father of modern physics," the "father of science," and finally "The Father of Modern Science." Stephen Hawking had said that, "Galileo, perhaps more than any other single person, was responsible for the birth of modern science."
To the motion of uniformly accelerated objects, what was taught in nearly all high school and introductory college physics courses, was studied by Galilei as the subject of kinematics. His contributions to observational astronomy had included the telescopic confirmation of the phases of Venus, the discovery of the four largest satellites of Jupiter, which was named the Galilean moons in his honor, and the observation and analysis of sunspots.
